Thursday may seem like a weird night for an awards show; but weird stuff has never stopped MTV in the past, and it’s sure as heck not going to stop them now. The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards went down last night at the Staples Center in downtown LA, and what a show it was! Rihanna won Video of the Year, One Direction took the Best New Artist award, and Nicki Minaj snagged Best Female Video—among many, many more. Check out the full list of winners here!

Because no awards show would be complete without a pre-show, MTV always goes all out for theirs. This year, it included a red carpet performance from Demi Lovato. This one seemed to go a little better than her People’s Choice Awards performance—and hey, she also won this year’s Best Video With a Message award for “Skyscraper!”
